How can I drive away snakes off my house and garden?

by admin on September 4, 2010

I found snake skin on my window – and I’m afraid it might be inside my house – I can’t find it. Can I do something to drive snakes away?

There is a snake repellent the will work for two months at a time and will cost about 25$.00 for a half acre lot

moth balls in the house and sulfur sprinkled around your garden/porch area will drive them away for good.

Generally, cats do a good job of keep snakes out of an area. Moth balls have also been said to be good, but the chemicals would not be good for a garden area or in a house with small children.

Well i know this is going to sound like a broken record but mouth balls, but you also need some seven dust ,or cedar cheep around your house or in flower beds, sulfur and or a out side dog or cat! Gennie’s hate and can detect when there is a snake around if you want to try them they also will eat fleas and ticks or any other kind of bugs in your yard.

If you have snakes on your property that means you have snake food on your property ie rats, mice, birds, lizards, other snakes, frogs, toads, fish etc….
Get rid of the snake’s food source and you get rid of the snakes. Rodents probably attract more snakes than any other group of animals. Clean up your yard, remove any brush piles, stacks of firewood, trash piles, loose rock piles, abandoned buildings or barns etc. Mow your property frequently & keep your bushes and trees trimmed. Don’t leave any type of pet or animal food out. Make sure any bird feeder does not spill excessive amounts of bird seed. Only use locking top or rodent proof trash cans.

Do these things and you will get rid of most rodents. Without rodents the snakes will look for food elsewhere.

Also products like moth balls & Snake Away have limited to no affect on keeping reptiles away and both contain possible carcinogens.

First of all do you know what type of snake that it was that left the snake skin? If you do then you know if the snake posses a possible threat to you or not. I would suggest – depending on where you live- getting a couple of horses or perhaps some guinees since they are good at killing snakes. Guinees are a type of bird and would help your yard and garden biologically. Hope that this helps.

Yeah, this question has pretty much been well answered. You really should find out what kind of snake it was that left the skin. A non-poisonous snake will definitely be a benefit, taking care of rodents and other pests for you. Of course a venomous one, well, it too will take care of the rodents and pests, AND the family dog, your chickens, your children, YOU!

(BUT if its NOT venomous, then I highly recommend that you get over your irrational fear of snakes, they do FAR more good than harm!)
