Okay so I move into an house w/ 2 acres in NC and the first thing I want to do is plant a huge vegetable garden. Huge problem, the thought of a snake terrifies me. Beyond our grassy patch of yard is wooded area covered w/ under brush. I have a 9 yr. old who wants to play back there and a baby turning 1 that I was hoping would spend time with mommy planting and caring for the garden. To make matters worse, I always imagined a man made pond too. It seems like I am creating the perfect enviornment for snakes. I am willing to try anything if it will keep them out of the yard? I need to know what really WORKS. What can I do to have peace of mind and allow my little ones to enjoy the yard too?

You can buy snake repellents. The main ingredient in most is aromatic naphtha, which is mothballs. The problem you’ll encounter in NC is Copperheads. It doesn’t work on them, and it sounds like you will be creating an ideal environment for them. With the area you are talking about I would suggest you try a few Guinea Hens. They will attack and kill most snakes and have the added benefits of eating lots of bugs and making racket when strangers are around.
I worked as an exterminator in TX for several years. I had many rural clients that kept these birds for these reasons.
Buy a couple of mongooses and let them roam the yard.
First thing i would do is figure out what types of snakes are native to your area. If there aren’t any poisonous snakes, you don’t really have anything to worry about, and they will likely keep to themselves.
If a pet, like a dog for example, is in the yard, the snakes will likely stay away as well. But if there are poisonous snakes around the area, you don’t want to put a dog at risk either.
In general though, the snakes will want their seclusion so a pet in the yard will likely encourage them to find a different yard to slither around in.
snakes also know where to stay or not. I f they find your place very quiet and almost no activity happens in a particular area. that is the place where they wants to stay. i suggest to make your garden very busy and and surely snake will keep away from your garden. i experienced that when we got home somewhere in tagalog region in the philippines. there are few house in that place then. and a lot of snakes roam around the place. we evan caught one. but when the place became busy snake are also gone.
