I want a pet snake, will it be compatible with my other pets?

Will it be compatible with my two dogs? I also have guinea pigs, but they stay outside the house. If so, what breed?

Do your research. If you haven’t had a snake i recommend a corn snake or something along the lines of that. Maybe a ball python if you’re ok with that. Balls and other smaller snakes (Not heavy bodied ones) won’t cause much harm to your dogs if it gets loose (they’d kill it first) and your piggies are outside so they’re safe from it.

Snakes aren’t breeds they’re species (lol not being mean at all)

Large snakes like Burmese pythons, reticulated’s, and others might seem cool to have, and might even be pretty cheap at a pet store for a common coloration, but remember those snakes get HUGE (200lbs over 15 feet long) and will be eating rabbits, chickens, and could easily swallow a small/med dog, and will require LARGE enclosures.

Do your research please. So many get snakes and then don’t realize they need heating/lighting…(NEVER USE A HEAT ROCK THEY CAN GET BURNT ON THEM…THEY’LL COOK ALIVE ON IT..I’VE SEEN IT) and aren’t like a dog or cat. They are wild animals that can be used to handling but will not have the same affection as a dog or cat or other small pet.

I love them.. I’ve held retics, had other smaller species, and they’re all awesome, but know what you’re getting into.

Also look up handling requirements. If you want a handleable snake, stay away from aggressive species. I’m actually doing some work for an exotic store and like he told me ..Hognosed snakes..their venom isn’t harmful to humans unless you’re allergic to bee stings..they make great pets, can be handled, and rarely bite..but most want big snakes that aren’t venemous..yet they’re aggressive, large and dangerous for one to handle. Tree pythons/boas aren’t good for handling yet cornsnakes and balls can be pretty docile most of the time. It also depends on the snake. Go to an exotics store, or speciality breeder. Not your generic petco. Most of those snakes have parasites, and die easily. Get a snake from someone that will let you handle its adult form first hand, let you see their babies, show you they are healthy and eating….(eating is a big must..see it eat before you buy it..if it refuses food and you don’t know what to do it can starve itself. )

And I wouldn’t let your dogs around it. They might not have the intentions of killing it but one misplaced nip or smack from a paw means a dead snake.

DO YOUR RESEARCH FIRST!!!

First, if your going to get a snake more likely than not, he’ll be in his cage. Second, for the first few months i wouldn’t let any animals around him. Snakes are amazing reptiles, but when scared will go into defensive mode.

The snake will have no problems with a dog, i have a corn snake with a chiuahaha and they do fine together. The guinea pig well thats another story, eventually one day the snake may attempt to go for it, assuming it’s ever inside.

Speicies you can pick from are Corn snakes (common), pythons (common)

For a first time snake owner, you might wanna go with corn snake, as they don’t get big, i’ve had mine a year now and he’s just at 2 feet long. And no bigger than a roll of dimes/nickels.

Well if your dogs are well behaving and well trained not to get their noses into things that are not for them it shouldnt be a problem. About breed im not sure excactly, but i know it should be easy to maintain and not big. You will get your answers at the et shop from specialist.
Although i think if you’ll decide to get a pet snake you might want to be sore at all times he’s in his terrarium, because if hes not – you’re pigs might be in danger :P

i’m more interested to know if you have any small children around, snakes do not respond well to children and may attack

by compatible, i assume you mean, living in the same house, with the snake in a vivarium, not in the same house running around together. and in that case sure, they are compatible, we have a snake and seven dogs, the dogs dont seem to bother the snake unless the snake gets scared (they release a scent into the air, which our dogs didnt like). my bro has his snake in his room and the dogs arent allowed upstairs anyway, so all live with a peaceful existence. if you want a snake, i suggest that you fully research their needs and behaviours first, (so many people ‘impulse buy’ animals these days, which is cruel and can be catastrophic). i suggest that you get a cor snake, they are the perfect starter snakes and they come in so many colours and patterns. my bro’s is a ghost amel, which is really pretty

you shouldn’t have a problem having a snake with the pets that you already own. As long as when you take the snake out to hold it that the dogs cannot have access to it, obviously. I would recommend getting a ball python as your first snake. they are relatively easy to start out with and are a great starter snake!

To be honest, I never understand why people want to keep snakes as pets, i mean they’re not affectionate, and more often than not you have to feed them live animals…also i’ll tell you a true story:

On man had a pet snake, and one day he woke up and the snake was just looking at him…not doing anything else…just staring at him…the snake done this for several days before the owner finally took it to the vet. The vet concluded that the snake was in fact getting ready to eat it’s owner!! =O, that story really creeps me out!!!

And also it’s probably want to eat your guinea pig…and dogs…so i’d say no…don’t buy a snake!!

Hope i helped =)

Snakes r wonderful animals. i had a C.A king snake, wich wuz one of the best pets i ever had. they get 6-10 feet! they live for a long time. in the wild, they eat rattle snakes other snake & rodents. in captivity feed them mice when their little rats when their big. C.A king snakes r the best! u can have other pets in the house, just be careful. secure the snake cage tightly or they r ure to get out. get a cage u can lock. only get one snake in one cage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or they will kill each other. they r escape artists, though. thats how how lost ours. :( . search the internet 4 more info. get a REALLY BIG CAGE AQUARIUM or they won’t be happy at all. remember to educate yourself before getting any pet. also remember that u will have to feed them other animals, so u cant be squeemish. good luck! :)

WOW SOME OF THESE PPL R IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A PET SNAKE WON’T ET A PERSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would say get a corn snake because dont get like a red tailed boa or anything like that or a bald python because thpse snakes get very very big and round and if it ever got out of the cage it would attack and most defiinatly kill your dog if it is a small breed, and badly injure or kill your dog if it was a big breed, and trust me a dogs dealth is so terribly agony. And the guenea pigs stay outside they should be fine, i guess but if if i dont think it would but if it got outside it can swallow one of those things whole :|
So dont get those breeds, stick with a corn snake.. even though they are quite corny :P
