I would like to get a pet snake, what should I look for?

by admin on August 23, 2011

I do not want a really big snake. Something that is long enough to wrap around my arm, but not a giant snake.

I also have a cat…would that be bad to have a cat and a snake?

And I also would like a colorful snake, like a yellow one. Please help me find the perfect snake and show me any websites you may know.

thanks.

WTF! Snakes are waaay smarter than worms! My snake figured out how to unhatch his cage from the inside! I don’t think a worm could do that! -grumbles-

Ball pythons are the best beginner snakes. They get on an average of 3-5 ft (about 3-5 lbs) They’re very bulky and generally slow-moving. They are also one of the most hesitant snakes to bite. I have a three yr old 3 1/2 ft male renamed Kaa. He was very shy and timid. Still is shy but has really opened up and is very curious. Likes to inspect EVERYTHING. ^.^ Very cute.

Well, if you’re really wanting a yellow snake, it’ll cost more (esp with ball pythons. Some of their morphs are veeeeery expensive) Might I suggest a corn snake? They are usually pretty docile, though I had one that was hell-bent on killing anything that moved.

The cat shouldn’t be a problem unless it attacks the snake. The snakes generally don’t go after cats and dogs (unless you’ve got a giant snake or maybe a kingsnake as those things eat everything!)

A cat will try to eat a small snake. A large snake will try to eat the cat.

Snakes have the intelligence of about that of a worm. If something is alive and will fit in their mouth, they will eat it.

Ball Pythons are great.
They are the least aggressive and if they like you, make great pets.
Spencer is his name, and keeping me company is his game!

I’ll try to help meet most of your criteria…
First about size, I would recommend a ball python or a garter snake. B. pythons are larger and may be a bit more than you want but go check one out, they are great snakes. Garter snakes are a bit smaller and a lot skinnier than ball pythons.
Second, as long as they were kept away… far away, it would probably be okay. But keep them far away please.
Finally- Any really colorful snake is probably dangerous or poisonous. b. pythons are more of a neutral green to brown and garter snakes con have yellow streaks so they may satisfy your yellow craving.

(P.S. – I LOVE ball pythons… I’d go with them)

I’d say a corn snake. They come in just about every color of the rainbow, but some of the phases will be more expensive than others. They get about 4-5 feet long but it depends on how much you feed them. Mine is downright mean but the species is supposed to be very calm and docile in general. Try to pick a nice one if you can so you don’t end up having one like mine. There’s plenty of information out there about them, too, as they’re fairly common as pet snakes.

I’ve also got 2 cats. One has broken the screen twice but the snake’s been okay. I just keep the door to my room closed all the time and it’s not really a problem.

Oh, since you want yellow, check out the butter, caramel, and creamsicle color morphs.

Corn Snakes.
They’re Really Good Pets Especially If They’re Your First Snakes.
They Get Between 4 – 6ft. But Don’t Worry It’s Not COmmon That They Get Much Over 5ft.
They Come In Many Different Colours.
And If Your Snakes In A Cage Then Don’t Worry About Your Cat.
I Have A Cat That Liked To Follow My Snow Corn’s Around They’re Cage When They’re Awake. But If You Have A Door Stop Then I Doubt They’ll Get Each Other.
And If You Don’t Like The Idea Of Having A Cat Around Your Snakes Keep The Snakes In A Room With The Door CLOSED So The Cat Can’t Get In There.

Try Going On Wikipedia And Researching Them. :)
