My only worry about getting a pet snake?

by admin on August 30, 2010

I am planning on getting a baby ball python my only worry is that i have a pet cocker spaniel dog. I hear that as long as i keep them separated it is ok but lets pretend the snake somehow got loose and my dog came face to face with it. Would my dog kill it or bark at it and what would the snake do if it saw my dog?

Like the first poster said, it really depends on the dog. But you would do well to just make sure you have a proper fitting lid for your tank. Preferably, its an exo terra tank because I have two of them and I can vouch that they are AMAZING cages and yes, completely escape proof. But I understand that they are pretty expensive so this may not be a favorable option.

But, assuming that somehow your snake gets out even with your best efforts at providing a secure enclosure.. Well, my German Shepherd has seen my snakes when I’m holding them, and he is more afraid/curious than aggressive. I think most animals have an instinct to be afraid of snakes. I’m not saying all dogs are like this, but thats just what I know from experience.

That really depends on your dog…if your dog has a habit of chasing small animals or cats, you have your answer. The snake might strike at the dog if the dog attacked, but most likely it would just try and slither off. Ball pythons aren’t so great at escaping as slender snakes like corns and kings. Put a lock on your viv and just double check every time…or get one of the Exo Terra style glass terrariums….its pretty hard for you to forget to close that right, and impossible for a snake to get out of. Once the snake gets bigger you’ll have little worry, if it gets out it won’t be hard to find!

You need to ensure that your snake can’t get out. You sure get a lid that fits the tank and then something to put on top of it so that he can’t get out. As a baby this won’t be a problem and a weight is optional, but as an adult I highly reccomend extra precautions to make sure he cannot escape

Keep your python on a shelf or a dresser so that your cocker can’t take the lid off and get to the snake.
