what is the smallest pet snake that beginners are able to have that are still safe?

by admin on August 21, 2011

by safe i mean that they are not venomous, don’t bite (if they do doesn’t hurt), and is calm. i am interested in ones that grow no longer than 2-3 feet. but i am mostly looking @ albino milk snakes, and corn snakes….a snake kind of in that range would be nice like behavior wise and stuff. so please help me out! thank you! also i have never owned a snake before. so i am a newbie sadly…

there are no commonly found (aka cheap) snakes that will stay between 2 and 3 feet.

smallest breeds you will find are corn, milk, and ball pythons. they all max out at around 4.5 – 5 ft.
5ft sounds big, but its really not. if you’re not comfortable with a 5footer, look into other reptiles. geckos and lizards are a great other option.

ive been looking into getting a snake (unfortunately college is a bitch and wont allow it) but the best breeds ive found are;
corn snakes (red rat snake)
royal pythons (ball pythons)
womas (sand pythons)
rough green snakes – these are very small and delicate but easily cared for
california king snake
milk snakes
if your feeling brave, a boa constricter – i dont really reccomend getting one as your first snake but i found it pretty easy to look after…… not to mention it grows fucking massive *refrains from making a thats what she said joke*

first off if a snake bites you it will hurt inevitably whether its a king cobra or a slow worm same with most things biting you really, but snakes tend to do a good job of it, none of the breeds ive suggested are venomous but the one i would personally go for is the royal python just cause i think theyre cool but they are pretty damn tame normally and youd have to physically try to piss one off to succeed (although just like people, you get some really grumpy bastards that get on with nobody, so just because its a tame species, doesnt mean it wont be a cunt at best so ask about the specific snake before buying it)

goes without sayin, do A LOT of research before gettin one because snakes might all be the same animal but different species have different habitats and temperatures etc.

Alright. To start off all snakes can bite. So don’t fix your thoughts on that. Kenyan Sand Boa’s are relatively small and run 70-100 dollars. Also kingsnakes make great pets yet they can be a little touchy at first and take a bit to warm up. Corn snakes make great pets and aren’t too hard to keep. Mostly all of these reach up to a maximum of 5 feet but usually 3-4. Kenyans however will be 2-3 ft in length. Males are even commonly found at 15-18 inches. Hope I helped ya out
